Resolutions are like the bloodline of the New Year spirit. I mean, the other day, a reliable source even told me that the word resolution is used 7 times more than usual when the new year is around the corner, I kid you not. 😂😉
I was that teenager that would sit down on the 31st of every year and make a long list of new year resolutions and then by the third day of the new year, I’d have amnesia like, “Did I really say I would do that? Well, thank God there’s next year,” then happily moonwalk back to my sinful ways. Micheal Jackson had nothing on me. 😋
I think I’m an adult now and although I still have that selective amnesia from time to time, I don’t waste my time writing resolutions.

Back to what I was saying, or typing, I think resolutions are a waste of time and I say this from experience. I have NEVER achieved anything I wrote down in a list on 31st.
The other year, I think 2016 or 2017, I was attempting to lose weight by starving myself. After two hours, I’d start seeing double and the rumbles from my stomach was loud enough to dance shaku shaku to.
Thankfully, I stumbled upon one “motivational” quote about how you should chop life before life chop you and before you know it, Mission Aborted. In 1 week, I was wailing about how my jeans don’t fit and I quickly assured myself that I would try again next year. And it was just January. Lmao. 🤡🤡🤡
It’s 2021 now.
I know there was a general feeling of gloom in the air for 2020 but personally, one thing that really helped me was this tip I got from the book Eat that frog by Brian Tracy and it upped my productivity tremendously. That tip was simply, “Every night before you go to bed, plan the next day.”
So every night before I drifted to dreamland, I would schedule reminders for everything I was supposed to do the next day.
From that single tip, I also learned how to dream big but start small in order not to get overwhelmed and start feeling like I can’t do what I want to do. Whatever thing I wanted to achieve, I would simply break into the smallest do-able task and get to it immediately. I cannot begin to tell you how much that helped me to do things that I had prolonged for the longest time. This blog you’re reading for example, is a by product of imbibing that tip into my daily life.
There was a time I beat myself up because I couldn’t answer the question, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”
NEWS FLASH, I still can’t see anything and it doesn’t even have anything to do with the fact that I am short sighted. 😤
If you’re like me, there’s really no need to beat yourself up about it. I’ve realized that there’s no point in dreaming up where you’d like to be in 5 years if you can’t plan towards it. It would just be a fantasy.
What I am trying to say is, Start Small. Start by planning your tomorrow, like the next day, literally. Put the things you’d like to achieve in a to do list and make sure you get a mirror at the end of the day when you’ve achieved everything in that list because you’ll literally by glowing with pride. Wahala for who no get Glo sim card. (Ok, just ignore me.) 😁
2021 is just a demarcation people.
Whatever unsolved problems you had in 2020 has crossed over with you, they’ve not magically disappeared. Whatever toxic traits you had, unsettled issues and grievances, they coming with you baby! 💃💃💃
Change starts now. I’m not against you planning your year out, not one bit. I admire people who do that sh*t like isn’t that a superpower or something? Please teach me!
What I’m saying is, if you have to wait until the end of the year/the start of a new year to plan it out, then you have missed the whole point.
Start now. I know that with practice, I’ll definitely get to the point where I can confidently plan my whole year and even the next 10 years. I’m not in a rush and I don’t think you should be either.
Throw the resolutions out!
Start with a daily plan if you really want to achieve something, anything for that matter.
- Don’t just say you want to lose weight, add a reminder to walk for 30 minutes everyday or to go to the gym.
- Don’t say you want to start a business, add a reminder for an one hour research daily on that business plan.
THAT is planning that will get you actual results.
It’s 2021 people! I’m really excited cos I get to stuff myself up again with jollof rize and other orishirishi in less than 7 days after the last stuffing (Christmas day) I mean, isn’t God wonderful? My waist is no longer looking cutie though 😭😭😭
I know there is a lockdown and for some people, they won’t get to do what they really want to. Still, focus on the good stuff, focus on what you CAN control and make that work.
My wish for everyone reading this is that 2021 gives you the strength and the opportunity to go forward and grab your dreams with both hands, no relenting. 💪
